So, first and foremost....What is Eczema?
Put simply, eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that causes the skin to become itchy, dry and cracked.
Often areas affected by eczema can look red, ooze or scab over and they can be susceptible to infection.
JUST TO BE VERY CLEAR.....ECZEMA IS NOT CONTAGIOUS.
The exact cause is still relatively unknown (sorry folks), but it can be related to a mutation of the gene Filaggrin. Without enough Filaggrin, the skin barrier becomes weak, allowing moisture to escape and bacteria to enter the skin.
Eczema is also strongly associated with inflammatory responses in the body to certain triggers. These could be things like: Food allergies, soaps and detergents, the weather and, in particular, high levels of stress.
Eczema will come and go. Sometimes you might find that your skin is soft and clear and the next day it's flare city!
Unfortunately, there isn't currently a cure, but symptoms can be managed in a variety of ways, including using self care techniques, emollients, medications and by maintaining a healthy diet.
